Liquidations FAQ

What does it mean to get liquidated in crypto?

A liquidation happens when a leveraged futures position loses so much that its margin can no longer cover the loss, so the exchange force-closes (liquidates) it. Traders call this getting rekt. Work out exactly where your own position would be wiped with the liquidation calculator.

What is the difference between a long and a short liquidation?

A long is liquidated when price falls to its liquidation level; a short is liquidated when price rises to it. A wave of long liquidations adds selling pressure while short liquidations add buying pressure — which can accelerate a move.

Where does the live liquidation data come from?

The feed aggregates public liquidation streams from major futures exchanges including Bybit, OKX, BitMEX and Deribit, and updates every few seconds. Coverage and timing vary by venue.

Why do large liquidations matter?

Clusters of liquidations at nearby price levels can cascade: each forced close pushes price further and triggers the next batch. See the danger zones on the liquidation heatmap, or practice risk-free in Paper Trade.
