What is a liquidation?

A liquidation is when an exchange force-closes a leveraged futures position because the trader's margin can no longer cover the loss. The position is sold (or bought back) at market, and the trader loses their margin. At high leverage the liquidation price sits very close to entry, so even a small move against the position can trigger it.

Long vs short liquidations

Long liquidations are over-leveraged buyers wiped out when price falls. Short liquidations are sellers wiped out when price rises. A large one-sided spike often marks a local extreme: a flush of long liquidations can mark a capitulation low, while a wave of short liquidations can fuel a short squeeze higher. The bar above shows which side is currently taking the most damage.

How traders use liquidation data

Clusters of liquidations act like fuel: when price reaches a zone packed with leveraged positions, the cascade of forced orders can accelerate the move. Watching where liquidations build up — and which side is heavier — helps you avoid getting caught in the same crowded trade, and spot where volatility is likely to spike next. Pair this page with the technical screener for entries and the liquidation-price calculator to size your own positions safely.
