Paper trading is how every serious trader starts: real prices, real mechanics, fake money. This guide covers what it is, how to practice properly — and the one thing no other simulator on the market offers: real rewards, paid leaderboards and a live social floor while you learn.

Paper trading means placing trades with simulated money at real market prices. Every part of the experience is real except the risk: you pick an entry, choose leverage, set a stop-loss, watch the P&L move at the live price, and — if you oversize — get liquidated exactly the way a real futures account would. The name is a relic from the pre-computer era, when practice trades were literally tracked on paper.
Brokers call the same thing a demo account; prop firms call it simulated trading. It is all one idea: build skill where mistakes are free, because in a live account the market charges full tuition for every lesson.
Every paper trading app gives you fake money and a chart. Then you practice alone, in silence, for nothing. MarginPad was built on a different idea — that practice sticks when it is social and rewarded:

The biggest criticism of paper trading is real: with nothing at stake, people practice bad habits. The fix is to practice under rules:
If your future real account is $500, do not swing $50,000 paper positions. Set the position size you will genuinely use, and treat the demo balance as if withdrawing it took a year.
Entry, stop, target, and the reason — before you click. MarginPad puts risk/reward and position-size calculators one tab away, and the built-in journal keeps every ticket so you cannot rewrite history.
Ten trades prove nothing. Run at least 30-50 closed trades with the same ruleset before judging it. The win-rate calculator and backtester tell you whether the edge is real or luck.
The most valuable paper trades are the losses — they cost nothing and teach the most. Get liquidated at 100x once, on purpose, and you will never need the lesson again. Watch the live liquidations feed to see what happens to traders who skipped it.
When your sample is profitable and your rules held, go live with a fraction of your intended size — the emotions of real money are the one thing no simulator can rehearse.
The chart is live, the balance is loaded, and the floor is trading right now. The only thing a real account offers that this one does not is the ability to lose your money.
