Crypto exchange comparison, from a trader’s seat
Not another affiliate top-10. This compares every major exchange by the things you actually feel mid-trade: how fees eat your PnL, how leverage sets your liquidation, how thin liquidity slips your fills, how funding bleeds a held position — and, just as important, whether the venue can be trusted with your money. Includes an honest look at the KuCoin controversy.
Affiliate disclosure: some links below are referral links — they cost you nothing (often they add a fee discount or bonus) and help keep MarginPad’s tools free. Our ratings are our own editorial take, not paid placement. Not financial advice — always do your own research.
How each factor hits your trade
Before the table — what these numbers mean when real money is on the line.
FeesCharged on entry and exit, on the full leveraged size. Round-trip a $10k position at 0.05% and you’ve paid $10 before the trade even moves. Scalpers feel this most — a referral fee discount pays for itself fast.
LeverageSets how far price can move before you’re liquidated. 100× ≈ 1% away; 500× ≈ 0.2%. A big “max lev” is marketing — what matters is the leverage you use and where your liq price lands.
LiquidityThin books = slippage: your market order walks up the ladder and fills worse than you saw. On majors the top venues are near-perfect; on exotic alt-perps even a modest order can move price against you.
Funding ratePerps charge funding every few hours to peg them to spot. Hold a crowded long and you pay the shorts — a slow bleed that can outweigh a small win. Same funding market-wide, but venues differ slightly.
Liq engine & insuranceHow the exchange closes underwater positions. A fair mark price and a fat insurance fund mean fewer unfair wick-outs and less auto-deleveraging (ADL) clawing back your winning trade.
Trust & safetyThe one that dwarfs the rest. Great fees mean nothing if you can’t withdraw. Regulation, proof-of-reserves, security record and how the venue treats victims decide whether your balance is really yours.

Every exchange, in depth
Ranked roughly best-to-worst for an active futures trader. Bars are our 0–5 editorial scores.

BybitBest all-round for futures
100×max levThe default home base for derivatives traders. Deep books on majors so your market orders fill near the mid-price, a fast matching engine that rarely lags in volatility, and a clean pro UI. Liquidations use a fair-price mark, so you’re less likely to get wicked out by a single bad print.

BinanceDeepest liquidity on earth
125×max levThe biggest book in crypto. On BTC/ETH your slippage is basically zero and funding is the reference the whole market watches. The trade-off is mandatory KYC and a heavier, feature-dense interface. If raw execution quality on majors is your priority, nothing beats it.

BitgetCopy-trading leader

MEXCLowest fees + most pairs
500×max levThe degen playground: the lowest taker fees around (often 0% maker), up to 500× leverage and the widest list of new/low-cap perps — you’ll find pairs here that exist nowhere else. The catch: those exotic books are thin, so slippage and wick-outs are real. Great for cheap majors trading and early listings, risky for size on small caps.

Gate.ioHuge altcoin selection
100×max levA veteran exchange with an enormous catalog — if a coin is tradeable anywhere, it’s probably on Gate. Publishes proof-of-reserves. Majors are fine; the long tail is where liquidity thins out, so treat small-cap perps with respect.

KrakenMost trusted / US-friendly
50×max levThe safety-first pick. Long, clean security record, strong regulatory standing, and one of the few solid options for US traders who want real derivatives. Fewer perps and lower max leverage — by design. If you value sleeping at night over 125×, this is your exchange.

CoinbaseMost regulated (US)
~10×max levThe blue-chip, publicly-listed US exchange — the highest bar on regulation and custody. Derivatives are limited and leverage is low, and spot fees on the simple app are high (use Advanced Trade for lower fees). This is the “my funds are safe” choice, not the “max leverage” one.

KuCoin⚠ Trust concerns — read below
100×max levOnce a popular altcoin-and-futures venue, KuCoin now carries serious reputation baggage (details in the trust section below). The product itself is usable — decent selection, familiar UI — but the questions around victim handling, KYC integrity and regulation are the real story here. Treat any funds you keep there as at-risk and do your own research.

The KuCoin problem — an honest word
⚠ Why we flag KuCoin
Reported by on-chain investigator ZachXBT, US prosecutors and EU regulators. Presented as public reporting — do your own research.
Jan 2025Pleaded guilty in the US to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, agreeing to roughly $300M in penalties and forfeitures; prosecutors said prior AML/KYC failures let suspicious funds move through the platform. KuCoin is banned for US users.
Aug 2025A user reported a $250,000 theft whose funds landed in five KuCoin deposit addresses allegedly opened with purchased “mule” KYC. When a community member spoke out, KuCoin reportedly threatened legal action over “false or unlawful statements.”
Feb 2026Austria’s financial regulator (FMA) barred KuCoin’s EU arm from onboarding new customers after it reportedly lost its key anti-money-laundering and sanctions compliance officers.
Apr–May 2026ZachXBT asked KuCoin to explain how $9.5M from a fake Ledger app was laundered through 150+ KuCoin deposit addresses in a single week, and later wrote that the exchange “does not assist victims or law enforcement,” calling the team “complicit” — alleging illicit funds flow freely as long as they generate fees.
So which exchange should you actually use?
If liquidity and execution are everything — Binance, then Bybit and OKX. If you want to trade without full KYC — Bybit or Bitget for majors, MEXC for cheap fees and new listings (mind the thin books). If you’re learning — Bitget for copy trading, or just paper-trade here first. If you’re in the US or safety comes first — Kraken or Coinbase, accepting fewer markets and lower leverage. And whatever you pick, the rule that matters more than any fee: don’t store what you can’t afford to lose on any exchange — they are for trading, not custody.
The smartest first move costs nothing: open our free Paper Trade terminal, run the exact setup you’re eyeing with live prices and real liquidation math, and see how it behaves before a cent of your money touches an exchange. Size your leverage with the liquidation calculator, watch the tape on the screener, and only then go live — through whichever venue above fits how you actually trade.
Fees, leverage and features change often — verify on the exchange before depositing. Ratings are MarginPad’s editorial opinion. Links marked as referral are affiliate links. This page is information, not financial advice.
